DISTILLING DOWN WASTE
Islay’s distilleries annually produce 500 tonnes of waste – everything from cardboard to office furniture.
IDI'S SOLUTION
By offering distilleries a number of recycling services, IDI diverts over 200 tonnes of waste from landfill and disposal, and into recycling streams. Processing as much waste as possible on the island preserves local jobs and minimises the number of lorry journeys, resulting in a lower carbon footprint.
IDI is also going further: we’re giving distilleries guidance on waste prevention and moving towards the ultimate goal – zero waste.

FUNDING AND SUSTAINABILITY
This project is income-generating and sustainable, and supports one full-time job.

SUPPORTERS
Bruichladdich, Lagavulin and Caol Ila distilleries, as well as Port Ellen Maltings, all use IDI recycling.
WIDER IMPACT
It’s an ideal combination – we’re creating employment, while reducing unwanted by-products from a crucial industry.
